Research

Next to the research areas of the Knowledge-based Systems Group (Prof. G. Lakemeyer, Ph.D.), and of the three FIT professors Visual Knowledge Management/Life Science Informatik (Prof. Dr. Berlage), Cooperation Systems/CSCW (Prof.  Prinz, Ph.D.), and Media Informatics/Media Processes (Prof. Dr. Rose), research at the chair contributes to the following four fields:

bullet Information and Planning Systems
The Information and Planning Systems group (FIT, Dr. A. Becks) is affiliated to Fraunhofer-FIT. Its research and product portfolio focuses on task- and process-oriented methods of information access for both, structured and unstructured information sources. In both, publicly funded research projects and contract research for industry we develop and evaluate tools that give users intuitive access to complex data spaces.

bullet Metadata in Community Information Systems
The research goal of the working group Metadata in Community Information Systems (Dr. R. Klamma) is a better understanding of the creation, use, and maintenance of metadata in the context of community systems.

bullet Model Management
The work of the Model Management group (Dr. C. Quix) aims at developing technologies and mechanisms to support the integration, merging, evolution, and matching of complex data models to support the management of complex, integrated, distributed, heterogeneous information systems.

bullet Engineering Information Systems
To support and improve design, operating and work processes in plastics and chemical engineering, the Engineering Information Systems group (Dr.-Ing. M. Schlüter) works on fine grained support of cooperative work processes and an approach for metadata based information and knowledge management.

See also our annual report from 2006 for a recent description of our research areas.
